Chemical in Plastic Containers Linked to Health Risks

British & US researchers have found that a chemical found in plastic containers is linked to heart disease.  The researchers have studied the effects of the chemical, which is called bisphenol A, by using data taken from US survey on nutrition dating from 2006.

The survey showed that high levels of bisphenol A found in urine samples was associated with heart disease.  The analysis also showed that the chemical had links to diabetes and some forms of liver disease.  US environmental health advocay groups are calling for a federal ban on bisphenol A.  Canada is planning to outlaw plastic baby bottles containing the chemical and the British charity Breast Cancer UK is urging the UK Government to do the same as there is evidence that the chemical is linked to breast cancer.
